SUMMARY:International Conference on Global Food Security
DESCRIPTION:The 4th International Conference on Global Food Security addresses the topic of food security at all spatial levels from local to global\, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. It aims to better understand environmental\, nutritional\, agricultural\, demographic\, socio-economic\, political\, technological and institutional drivers\, costs and outcomes of current and future food security. Interactions with contextual factors including climate change\, urbanisation\, greening the economy and data-driven technologies will be central. The conference addresses the triple burden of malnutrition: hunger\, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. It explores the state-of-the-art of interdisciplinary insight\, addresses the trade-offs that occur – and synergies that can be sought –in transforming food systems. These are aimed at reconciling the competing environmental\, economic or social objectives and outcomes towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at different levels across spatial and temporal scales.

SUMMARY:InFish in-person meeting
DESCRIPTION:Agenda and more details coming soon! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCraig Paukert (USGS) and Ralph Tingley (U. of Missouri) are doing some amazing behind the scenes work to coordinate our 2019 in-person meeting this April 16-18th in Columbia\, Missouri.  For travel purposes\, please plan on full days worth of meetings on the 16th and 17th with a half day on the 18th.  As a reminder: as a voluntary network\, all attendance at in-person meetings are self-funded.  BUT\, the meeting venue does have good internet and remote participation (though less desirable) will surely be possible.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting agenda is still in development but we will have a preliminary draft to share with the group by our February call.  Topics for the meeting will include a scoping session for the next iteration of the 2015 Global Inland Fisheries Conference (coordinated regional meetings? remote sessions? funding sources?)\, another plenary session on visioning for the InFish network\, and likely two breakout groups.  Proposed topics for the breakouts include: recreational fisheries\, supporting the WWF living planet report needs\, and indicators of conservation effectiveness.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLodging\n\n\nThe conference will be held at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center. We have a small block (15 rooms) of kings and doubles reserved at a\nreduced rate of $105/night. The block will be available until March 16th. The discounted rate will not be guaranteed after this date.  You can book online using the group code: 209873  or call directly at 1-800-659-2220.  If you call\, please reference the “InFish Annual Meeting” block starting on April 15th.\n\n\nAir travel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColumbia Airport\n\nLess flights but several arriving the evening of the 15th and leaving afternoon of the 18th.\nThe conference center is about 20 minutes away and Uber would cost about $25. Several car rental companies are also available at the airport.\n\n\nSt Louis Airport\n\nAbout 1.5 hours from conference center\nMOX Shuttles run about every hour and a half and must be booked ahead of time. If you book at least 24 hours out\, you can have them drop you off directly at the conference center. Costs are between $50-60 one way.\n\n\nKansas City Airport\n\nAbout 2 hours from the conference center\nMOX Shuttles run about every three hours and must be booked ahead of time. If you book at least 24 hours out\, you can have them drop you off directly at the conference center. SUMMARY:The 4th Mississippi-Yangtze River Basins Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Mississippi and Yangtze (Changjiang) River Basins\, the largest basins of North America and Asia\, serve as the principal navigational waterways and main water sources\, and play important economic\, social\, cultural\, and ecological roles in the two continents. Maintaining sustainable fishery resources\, biodiversity and ecosystem health are extremely important for achieving sustainability in the two basins. This symposium was developed after the first Mississippi-Yangtze River Basin Symposium (MYRIBS) at Little Rock\, Arkansas\, USA during the 143rd American Fisheries Society (AFS) Annual Meeting in September 2013\, the 2nd MYRIBS in 2015 at Wuhan\, China\, and the 3rd MYRIBS in 2016 at Kansas City\, Missouri\, USA. The 4th MYRIBS will be in Chongqing\, the upper Yangtze in southwest China. We also encourage papers from other large river or lake basins or related areas in China\, US\, and beyond. Presentations and discussions will focus on: (1) biology and management of special fish species (e.g.\, Asian carps\, sturgeons); (2) fishery and aquatic resources and biodiversity in upper\, middle\, and lower basins; and (3) Habitat\, river\, lake and watershed restorations. This symposium will include a 2-day oral presentation session and a 3-day facility and field tour. Symposium attendees will be provided with the opportunity to evaluate approaches and techniques for transferability within and between the two basins. This symposium will continue serving as a platform for the long-term plan of international scientific program consisting of collaborative studies\, visiting scholars\, and information exchange between the United States and China through the collaborations between AFS and China Society of Fisheries.

SUMMARY:InFish Session at 147th Annual Meeting of American Fisheries Society
DESCRIPTION:Symposium Title: ‘Linking inland fisheries to global policies in sustainable development‘ \n\n\n\nSymposium Organizers:\nSui Chian Phang (Ohio State University); Doug Beard (USGS); Julie Claussen (University of Illinois); Steve Cooke (Carleton University); Ian Cowx (University of Hull); Abby Lynch (USGS);\nAshley Steel (US Forest Service); Bill Taylor (Michigan State University)\n\n\n\nSymposium Description:\nGlobal policies\, such as the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals\, the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Initiative\, and the Convention on Biological Diversity Strategic Plan are directed to influence government policies and priorities for a sustainable future. Inland fish and fisheries are often conspicuously absent from these global policies\, even with the growing body of research that demonstrates the large role that they play in contributing to livelihoods and food security. This omission illustrates the severe lack of understanding of the value of inland fish\, as well as the importance of healthy freshwater ecosystems\, in economic and policy arenas. Poverty reduction\, human health\, clean water\, and economic opportunities are just a few of the areas that inland water and fisheries play a significant role\, and global policies are missing the opportunity to highlight their true value or to elevate their importance in policy discussions. This symposium combines new research\, case studies\, and policy overview presentations that identify opportunities for inland fish and fisheries to contribute to achieving existing conservation and development policy goals. We will end the symposium with a panel discussion building on the combination of perspectives from the contributed presentations to discuss how best to build strategies to insert inland fisheries into future global policy. The organizers and speakers will write a summary paper detailing these strategies.
