Biodiversity and conservation in Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and its shoreline is home to millions of people. Its freshwater fish, including Nile perch, tilapia, and dagaa (a small minnow), produce over one million tons of catch each year. The commercial fisheries of the lake have been an economic boon to Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. But in recent years, catch has gone down while effort has gone up. Investors and small entrepreneurs alike are exploring the option of aquaculture and, in particular, cage aquaculture built directly into the lake. In a new study led by InFish’s Sarah Glaser (of Secure Fisheries), a team of researchers from around the world are exploring the potential impact of cage aquaculture on the lake’s wild fisheries.
